Board director experience as 30 y.o.
How important/rare is it to have had board director experience early in your career (say around 30 years old)? Our firm just bought a minority stake in a $1b+ EV company and one of the directors is a 29 y.o. senior associate at his shop (well known PE fund with $5b+ fund - ages of all board directors are disclosed). None of our senior associates and few VPs hold board seats (granted to the MDs who oversaw the deal process or work in AM). I'm only at an 2yr associate level currently but I'm wondering if I should view this as a hurdle for my personal career development at my current firm.
Not really. It's usually just because you need the majority of seats. In practice only the senior deal partner really has a say on the board and everyone else just votes with him/her.
It’s good to learn about governance and working with senior management first hand but you can get most of those benefits even as an observer.
Useless but cool
Usually complete bullshit “position”.
Doesn’t matter as long as you’re present in board meetings / admin items so you see how it all works.
Being an Associate board observer / director really means just quietly watching board meetings. Occasionally your MD will humor you by letting you ask a question that you only realize was a pants on head retarded thing to say a few hours after the meeting.
Then you do follow ups, like the board decided to issue some equity to some new hires, and your lawyers fucked up the incentive equity documents because they can’t do anything involving numbers correctly to save their lives, and then the boomer management team can’t work a DocuSign so they print out the docs, sign them, take a photo of them, and send them back to you.
Then on your resume you write “designed growth strategy for company while overseeing cost reduction initiative of company”
That’s basically it in a nutshell
