For those of you who attended non-targets, how did you get into PE? Looking for advice in terms of networking, other routes in besides PE directly, preferably in other investment areas, what types of firms to seek specifically/how you tapered your search. Any advice is appreciated.

state school kid here, take a job in valuations right out of school at Lincoln bust your ass, go do 2 years in IB after that, then MAYBE land a LMM or MM PE role. Network your ass off
Pretty much just get into IB. From there target or not becomes less relevant for PE recruiting
