Can you get into private equity as CS major ?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently a junior studying Computer Science at a non-target school in Asia with a strong interest in finance, especially Private Equity. I don’t come from a traditional finance background (no IB/consulting internships yet), but I’ve been self-studying financial modeling, M&A, and LBOs through Wall Street Prep and other online resources.

I’ve also worked on a few SaaS and data-driven projects and have internship experience in a research lab (AI/backend focused). My goal is to eventually transition into Private Equity—ideally in a tech-focused or growth equity fund where I can leverage my technical skill set.

My questions:

  1. What are realistic pathways for someone with a CS background to get into PE?
  2. Is it better to pivot into IB first, or are there PE firms open to tech/CS profiles?
  3. Would doing a Master’s in Finance or MBA help bridge the gap?
  4. Are there tech PE/growth equity funds (like Insight, Thoma Bravo, Silver Lake) that actively hire engineers or product folks into investment roles?
  5. Any tips on networking, cold emailing, or specific internships I should aim for in my final year?

Would love to hear from anyone who made a similar transition or knows someone who did. Appreciate any insight you can share!

Thanks in advance!
