Canadian Sophomore Recruiting for US PE

Hi guys - I wanted to ask about recruiting for US PE summer analyst positions as a Canadian student. Background on myself, semi-target, one completed big 5 IB internship, incoming big 5 IB internship and incoming summer pe internship at a pension, relatively high GPA.

Wanted to get some clarity on process, how to prep, useful materials/resources, any possible visa issues, or just asking for people to share their experiences if theyve gone thru or know someone who has gone thru a similar process.

Thanks in advance!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about recruiting for US PE summer analyst positions as a Canadian student:

  1. Challenges for Canadian Students: Analysts at Canadian banks, especially the Big 5, often face difficulties breaking into US PE. This is primarily due to two factors:

    • Recruiter Attention: US recruiters may perceive Canadian banks as less competitive compared to BBs or EBs in Toronto.
    • Visa Issues: Securing sponsorship for work in the US can be a hurdle, so ensure you’re clear on visa requirements early in the process.
  2. Preparation:

    • Technical Skills: Focus on mastering LBO modeling, financial statement analysis, and valuation techniques. WSO’s Private Equity Interview Bootcamp and LBO modeling courses are highly recommended.
    • Behavioral Prep: Be ready to articulate your story, why PE, and how your experience aligns with the role.
    • Industry Knowledge: Read industry primers and books like Competition Demystified to deepen your understanding of PE.
  3. Resources:

    • WSO’s Private Equity Master Package offers comprehensive training on LBO modeling and the PE deals process.
    • Networking is key. Reach out to alumni or professionals in the US PE space, especially those with a Canadian background, to gain insights and referrals.
  4. Visa Considerations:

    • Research the H-1B visa process or other work authorization options. Some firms may be more open to sponsoring international candidates, so prioritize those in your applications.
  5. Insights from Others:

    • Many successful candidates from Canada have leveraged experience at BBs or EBs in Toronto to transition into US PE. Your Big 5 IB and pension PE internships are solid stepping stones, but targeting a BB/EB internship in the future could further strengthen your profile.

I know someone who did this. They went to BX. Sounds like only the very best firms will even bother recruiting Canadians, and then you'll have to make the hard sell that off cycle B5 is worthy of KKR.

With a resume like that I would just recruit for IB.

Funniest

The best part about canada is that I know exactly who that is lol

Do you have advice for making those big 5 off cycles worth it? I feel like idk anything when it comes to US recruiting and PE specifically

Similar profile to you - semi target Canadian, did off cycle IB, then did a summer at BX. Main thing tbh is being a keener and making sure you get staffed on extra shit - people in the US are obviously more critical of semi target Canadians so you gotta try to stand out beyond just being the comps and market update intern. A lot of that is obviously outside your control, but helps to be super eager to the extent you can. In hindsight though, a lot of it also comes down to how well you can spin your experiences in interviews.
