Consultant to PE: How many cDDs before recruiting?

If at an MBB, how many CDDs should someone who wants to move to UMM/MF have done before recruiting? Does one need to be dedicated to a PE-practice or can they just do a few DDs and some other work as well?

I know timelines are wonky with on-cycle repeatedly getting pushed up, but let’s assume this person recruits during their second year (pretty normal for consultants).

Do as many as it takes to get 3 good deals you can talk about on your CV (good overall deal e.g. it closed, large cap fund, high profile, and good role/impact for yourself) then leave

I guess you could say more is typically better, though I only had one on my resume and recruiting worked out fine. If anything, it ended up making things easier as people asked about that more than any other case experience that I listed so it's less preparation

That all to say, wouldn't really worry about quantity as being able to talk through all of them very well

Interesting - have heard a perfect split between this answer and the prior one.

Did you recruit shortly after joining?

Either way, will get a few good reps and make sure that I can speak to them deeply, concisely, and eloquently. Thank you!

I recruited at the ~1.5-2yr mark

I don't doubt more reps would be helpful, I'm more so just saying it's not something to stress on

Additionally, mileage will vary but I definitely recommend moving on after you get like 5-10 like the below commenter suggests. PE DD is undoubtedly good training to get faster and understand how to think through an investment thesis, but you're not going to be using the hard skills in PE at several shops (e.g., survey, market sizing model, interviewing) because you hire consultants (duh) so worth exploring industries of interest and different functional areas
