Consulting to PE

Wanted to check in on the long debated topic of consulting to PE.

Background: High performer with 2 YOE at big4 strategy consulting (out of non-target undergrad, 3.6 GPA), willing to put in the work for PE. Have not yet worked on any deals, only M&A strategy work, business strategy, and operational efficiency improvements. Planning to work on a pre-deal diligence soon.

Question: What’s the best way to land an interview at a reputable MM or ideally UMM fund?

I want to work on the investment team but will settle for the operational side.

Should I go for an MBA or is there any chance I can land an interview? If there is a chance, what can I do to optimize my chances?

Are you at Parthenon? If so, I'd reach out to former consultants now in PE and would start reaching out to headhunters that have historically worked with consultant friendly firms. If you're at another B4, I imagine it would be more of an uphill battle but you could still try and recruit for LMM/ smaller MMs and worst case go the bschool route. I’m not familiar with other B4s outside of EYP that place well in PE but I’m sure others can opine. MBB is obviously well discussed and would be the simpler potential route.

I'd say the only real chance of transitioning from B4 Strategy is from EYP or S&. I think it will be a very uphill battle coming from Deloitte. The best advice I believe would be transition to MBB or EYP/S&. Of course, hiring is non-existent right now, so that presents an issue.
