Feeling like I could have done better

I participated in on cycle and interviewed at 3 places - an MF, an UMM, and a MM (~4-5bn latest fund size). I felt I was decently prepared and went quite far in the first two processes but eventually struck out, but got an offer from the MM firm (which tbh, is a great place, great people, and great reputation, etc). Due to how quick everything happened, I felt I had no choice but to accept it.I feel like I would have liked to be at a slightly larger place as an associate though, and can't help but shake the feeling that I could have done better. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Is it worth it to continue to recruit?

I'd honestly try to shake the feeling off. A lot of people feel like this. Recruiting is often a game of luck. I can appreciate how fast things move but at the end of the day, no one forced you to sign an offer.

If it's a great place with great people and a great reputation, I feel like there's more downside than upside by continuing to recruit in your situation. Jumping from a place like AEA to New Mountain (just making up names for an example) isn't worth it IMO. Better to preserve goodwill with the HH and maybe try to re-recruit after a year on the new job if you feel the same way. Perhaps you could have an angle if something came up with respect to geography (e.g., girlfriend / boyfriend gets a job in a different city, parents move, etc.).

Imho, the people you work with really matter. You will likely be spending more time (virtually and in person) with them than with friends/fam. Pay and prestige ofc do matter, but the long term trajectory is even more important, which depends on how well you adapt and enjoy the work. If you like people and work, it is lot easier to learn and grow there.
