Funds in DC?
Looking for a list of funds or family offices based in DC + any insights into group culture/hiring cycles/etc. Coming from REGLL IB so preference for REPE, but keeping options open considering location is a huge factor for me.
Obviously Carlyle is HQ in DC but seems like it’s mostly back office roles with investment teams in NY, unless I’m understanding it wrong.
Based on the highest ranked content on WSO, here are some insights into funds and family offices in the Greater Washington DC area:

In no particular order (including Northern Virginia and Maryland too):
I'm sure I missed a handful but this should hopefully be enough to get a sense of what's out there. You can Google the fund sizes to get a sense of operational maturity / target profile / etc. Most are going to have a focus on Aerospace & Defense / Government Contracting given the Washington D.C. footprint (again, would check investment criteria on their websites). Culture will vary widely across the firms, best way to get a sense is interview around, reach out to former Associates, and look at deal flow and fund lifecycle to see how busy they've been / will be in the near term.
Do you know of any private credit funds in the area other than MidCap?
Gladstone is in Mclean
Enlightenment does full cap stack solutions as do I believe a couple others on this list. I don’t know of anyone in the DMV who does just credit.
Boundary Street
Oxford finance
Super helpful, thanks! Reaching out to folks in those groups now. Do you think it’d be worth lateraling into HL’s ADG group to break into the DC scene? I saw they’re hiring associates rn so may be an option if I’m that keen on being in DC. Thoughts?
Definitely think it would give you a leg up. Scrappy Gym Rat Student of the Game did a great write up on DC IB a few years ago, I'd recommend reading through that and applying around to some of those shops as well: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-banking/ib-in-greater-washington-dc.
Couple updates in reading through their list:
Banks doing the most sell-side volume in the ADG space right now are probably Baird, Raymond James, KippsDeSanto, and G Squared. DC Advisory and Clearsight are also fairly active, they're just more commercially oriented / not pureplay ADG like the others. HL has kind of faded since Jean Stack and John Song left to start up the ADG practice at Baird back in ~2018. HL's DC team has still done a handful of deals the past few years (their Los Angeles A&D group is much more active), but if you're looking for a quick pit stop before pivoting into PE in the DC Area, those other shops will probably give you more immediate live deal experience to speak to in interviews.
Grain Management, also JMI Equity has offices in both Baltimore and DC
Do you really want to be in Baltimore with all the jittlelang fuhlitoogans
Thanks! Insights on either? Culture, comp, etc?
EIG for Energy
Artemis for REPE
Artemis is a great rec - thanks! Any insights into the group by any chance?
Buddy interned there and loved the people, not much other info sorry
Baird has a RE IB group in DC. Their ADG group is probably the strongest group in DC, so the Baird RE group that also sits there doesn't get the same thought, but it's a great place. The RE group is small, I think 10-15 heads in all, but from a friend who recruiting there, junior experience seems to be pretty good.
Great to know thank you!
