Gender and racial diversity VPs and Above
Are women and racial minorities in PE investing roles just stuck at very junior levels? I'm not necessarily a believer in DEI policies, but some firms seem just way out of line with what you'd expect in 2025. Which firm / group you know is still stuck in their old ways?
PE is very male. Lot of reasons for that. It’s not that white though — I notice tons of Asians and South Asians . Getting less male too but it will always be somewhat male because of how many women leave the workforce to take leadership of homemaking / children raising.
If this is a genuine concern for you in 2025 then you clearly don't "get it" and have no business working in this industry.
PE senior ranks are dominated by White, South Asian, and Asian males with the South Asian and Asian partners typically being more recent. Even amongst the female MDs, it's almost always White, South Asian, and Asian.
Either way, we are in Trump's America and corporates do not simply care about DEI. Maybe will see less international hiring and more American hiring; but those 3 groups are overrepresented at top targets and IB anyways even when only considering American citizens, so will not expect PE ranks or PE senior rank demographics to change much.
Almost like those are the people who found/own the most/best businesses PE might want to buy. But that would be racist to notice and perpetuate a stereotype...
Never said I disagreed with it being those races nor shared my opinion. I am simply sharing the way it is. As a note, I do broadly agree as expressed in the later half of my comment, that these populations make up most where banking/pe sources analysts and is always the broader group of people most interested in careers in this field. It makes a lot of sense why we are overrepresented.
I do want to note that there is a bit of a difference between making business and investing, just very different risk profiles and skills required. I also never called anything racist, don't just assume intensions for people.
a lot of female asians in MF PE though...Look at KKR US they literally have 1 asian female Principal for each sector (the consumer one left a while ago though) but healthcare has 2, and recently promoted one to Director. WP GA also known to have a lot of asian females at the associate level.
partner level haha its a different story, maybe at most one will make Partner, but we will see in 5 years...
It takes a long time to get to senior levels in PE and DEI is a relatively recent thing. So would have to wait a few more years to see how things shake up
I think you’re setting yourself up for failure on this forum when you ask if women/minorities are “stuck” at very junior levels, implying something broadly systemic / nefarious.
More constructive to ask what the path is for minorities / women, and asking why it’s mostly white/male dominated today (is it the nature of who started businesses 30 yrs ago, people tend to get along better with people who look alike, cultural backgrounds around work ethic and risk taking, need for maternity leave, etc rather than just defaulting to race and gender).
DEI is dead, look to the new world order because the old one isn't coming back
