Growth pipeline work: Best practices

I am at a large cap PE platform that is heavily pushing into Growth Equity and end up spending more of my time in the space vs. traditional buyouts.

What becomes evident is that working the pipeline is just much more difficult in Growth Equity with so many businesses receiving funding and getting into our strike zone vs. the relatively limited number of good buyout targets.

How do you guys keep track of all the activity and work your pipeline? I speak regularly with banks, advisers, VC firms and founders that refer me to other founders etc, but haven‘t found the right system to track all of that data (financials, contact, business description, key qs, etc.) yet.

I currently track in excel + DealCloud but that can’t be the best way to do it.

Any recommendations?

I use excel for tracking personal outreach and try to keep things pretty simple - last outreach date, future outreach date, capital raising history, industry, number of emails, etc. Then Roam Research for note taking and thesis-building. And of course our CRM.

The Roam Research thing is big for me. Can easily look back at my notes on companies and competitors (or industry notes) to quickly get to key questions, financials, investment thesis, etc. I'd highly suggest trying it out as a note-taking tool (also good for personal note-taking, journaling, etc.).
