How do you qualitatively evaluate a company?
Hey guys,
I’m currently interviewing for off-cycle internships at UMM european PEs. In one interview, I was asked how I would evaluate whether a specific company could be an interesting investment for the PE. I answered that I would look at the industry (using porters five forces as well as estimating market growth), the character of the company (i.e. its business model, ESG, legal problems), its capability of being leveraged (i.e. its asset base and cashflow generation), whether EBITDA could be increased (through Margin expansion or sales growth) and whether there was a chance of multiple expansion (e.g. trough add-ons). However, I have not got feedback on this approach and would be curious how the PE professional among us, evaluate whether a company is worth to be explored. Looking forward to insights and thank you in advance!
