How to be more mysterious in IB/PE (summer intern)?

Hi - I am an incoming summer intern at a top BB. Don't know how I landed this off-cycle. But now I gotta prepare to convert it full time.

at the same time, I wanna work on my aura and how I am presumed by people. What are some dressing tips to avoid presumptions by my seniors? presumptions in terms of family background - im used to wearing ralph and tom ford suits, shirts, and semi casual stuff too. I also have an european accent and have been told that I come off as someone who's from a privileged background.

How do I avoid that? I do not wanna be seen as the broke intern either.

To strike the right balance and avoid presumptions about your background while maintaining a professional and approachable aura, here’s what you can do based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Dress Well, But Subtle: Stick to well-tailored, classic suits in neutral colors like navy, charcoal, or black. Avoid flashy brands or logos that scream luxury. Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford are fine, but opt for their understated pieces. The goal is to look sharp without drawing unnecessary attention to your attire.

  2. Shoes and Accessories: Keep it simple. Black or dark brown leather shoes with matching belts are timeless. Avoid overly expensive watches or accessories that might signal wealth. A clean, functional watch is enough.

  3. Blend In with the Office Norms: Observe what others in your office wear during your first week and align with that. As one WSO thread suggests, assimilating with the office culture is key—don’t stick out unnecessarily.

  4. Confidence Over Flash: Confidence is what truly makes an impression. As Deion Sanders said, "Look good, play good. Play good, get paid good." Focus on your work ethic and attitude rather than overthinking your appearance.

  5. Tone Down the Accent: If your European accent is a concern, focus on clear and professional communication. People will respect you for your skills and contributions, not your background.

  6. Avoid Name-Dropping or Flashy Behavior: As highlighted in WSO threads, don’t flaunt connections, wealth, or privilege. Keep your background in your back pocket and let your work speak for itself.

  7. Be Approachable: While maintaining professionalism, show humility and gratitude for the opportunity. Engage with your team, ask questions, and show genuine interest in learning.

Remember, the goal is to be remembered for your skills, attitude, and work ethic—not your wardrobe or background. For more tips, check out this WSO thread: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-banking/summer-2017-in…</a">Summer 2017 Investment Banking Interns - Do's and Don'ts List.
