How to explain short stint on resume

Joined a small acquisitions shop a few months ago that was talking up their strategy of buying deals in the current environment. My old firm wasn’t buying anything and potentially cutting people so I made the jump.

Fast forward to now, new shop hasn’t bought anything and boss said they probably aren’t going to buy anything while rates keep running. Last week, my boss casually asked if I would be cool with taking November and December unpaid “to do some traveling and enjoy the holidays” and resuming to hunt deals in January. Wtf??? I can’t afford vacation if I’m not getting paid, dude.

How do I spin this story as I start looking? I’m not technically unemployed but I’m going to stop being paid?? I hear job market sucks even worse than deal market and I need to eat/pay rent.

I have a solid deal sheet, but they’re all from prior job. That firm hasn’t bought anything and my old peer was fired recently. Was this current experience better than staying put and getting fired? I’m not holding my breath that new shop will actually do anything come January.

How would you explain current job in interviews, or even before that - how to explain current job on resume to get the interview?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach this situation:

  1. Resume Presentation:

    • On your resume, focus on the skills and responsibilities you’ve undertaken at the new acquisitions shop, even if no deals have closed. Highlight your involvement in deal sourcing, financial modeling, due diligence, or any other relevant tasks. For example:
      • "Conducted market research and financial analysis to identify potential acquisition targets."
      • "Supported deal evaluation processes, including financial modeling and due diligence preparation."
    • Avoid emphasizing the lack of closed deals. Instead, frame your role as contributing to the firm’s strategic positioning in a challenging market environment.
  2. Interview Explanation:

    • Be honest but strategic. Explain that you joined the firm to pursue opportunities in acquisitions during a volatile market. Acknowledge that the firm’s strategy shifted due to macroeconomic conditions, but emphasize your proactive contributions and adaptability.
    • Example response: "I joined the firm to work on acquisitions in a challenging market. While the firm decided to pause deal activity due to rising interest rates, I gained valuable experience in deal sourcing, financial analysis, and market evaluation. I’m now looking for an opportunity where I can apply these skills in a more active deal environment."
  3. Addressing the Unpaid Period:

    • If asked about the unpaid period, frame it as a mutual decision to reassess opportunities in the new year. Avoid sounding negative about the firm or your boss.
    • Example response: "Given the current market conditions, the firm decided to pause acquisitions temporarily. During this time, I’ve been actively exploring opportunities to leverage my deal experience and continue contributing to the industry."
  4. Was the Move Worth It?:

    • While hindsight might make the move seem questionable, it’s important to focus on the positives. You avoided potential layoffs at your previous firm and gained exposure to a new environment. Use this narrative to show resilience and adaptability.
  5. Navigating the Job Market:

    • Leverage your solid deal sheet from your prior job to demonstrate your capabilities. Network aggressively and tap into your industry contacts to uncover opportunities. Highlight your readiness to hit the ground running with your prior experience and recent exposure to market dynamics.

By framing your experience strategically and focusing on your skills and adaptability, you can present yourself as a strong candidate despite the challenges at your current firm.
