How to spend the rest of my time in PE
I've got about 5 months left, have already done more deals than most across a variety of deal types aligned with my interests, and am headed to HBS in the fall. I'm coasting pretty nicely now on portco work - should I raise my hand for more deals or should I just try to chill? My reference at this point would be average (good guy but meh with numbers) and I have no interest in returning to PE. We've all been remote so I wonder if it's worth dialing it in while I'm here in person. The flip side is I can rehabilitate some relationships with friends and family with the free time and explore my personal interests instead that might help and will be aligned with my post-MBA career interests. Thanks for any reflections my brain is as smooth as a marble at this point in my Associate program.
Chill and coast, for sure. Assuming they don’t pink slip you in the meantime
Appreciate the reply, that won't happen, chill to me =/= do a bad job, more so chill == avoid getting staffed on new deals.
Coast. You said you're leaving the industry and not returning so I don't see much upside to spooling back up on new deal work. Even if you did manage to close a deal, you would have to think it is really worth the resume' bullet point to forgo the R&R.
Thanks for the input. Yea I want to do tech or venture but my firm does not do tech deals so not sure of the value of yet another one of what I've been doing.
Thanks to both who have commented so far. Both responses have been confirmatory so I'm looking for a few more responses, either a couple more confirmatory posts to drive it home, or some contradictory points so that I see something I currently don't.
Just chill and enjoy HBS. what are you plans after if not going back to PE?
What are your plans after? Also, are you at an MF or MM PE fund?
Don't have to kill yourself but I at least wouldn't visibly coast. Most the people I saw go to MBA including those that say they planned never to come back ended up just coming right back to the industry. Point being your mind may change once you decompress in those first few months of b school, and you may end up needing those recs. It's not that much longer an amount of time...
Agree. It's better to leave your reputation in high regard. Coasting could be simply not going the extra mile right? Don't run 5 sensitivities, run 1. Don't spend 4 hours researching something, spend 2. Right? Know what I mean? Don't spend extra time reading about an industry,....
Thank you both for the guidance, this is valuable.
