I Gave Up on Buyside Recruiting - Dropping Prep Materials + Technicals

Hello fellow monkeys.

Recently, I decided to give up on buyside recruiting and stay on as an Associate in IB. I realized I simply didn't want it enough and just ran out of energy to dedicate to the search. I've also frankly enjoyed my time in IB a lot and look forward to continuing my path here. A big shoutout and thank you to everyone on WSO that gave me advice and helped me throughout the process. Feel free to AMA.

A few months ago, I said I would drop the technicals I got throughout my process, so I am keeping this promise.

I've gathered a bunch from myself and fellow friendly analysts. Attached is my collection of technicals and case questions I / my friends have gotten throughout the years in buyside recruiting.

Note that I do not have all the answers, as a bunch were not asked to me.

Edit: Also, I have to give a shoutout to WSO's Private equity interview prep course. It was absolutely invaluable in my prep. I may not have secured an offer (because I suck at walking through deals lmao...) but I passed every model test I got thanks to the course.

Edit 2: >100 people have now received access and my inbox is "clear". I 100% missed a few messages (WSO inbox is not built for mass message tracking lol..) just message me again with your email and LinkedIn, thanks.

Hey thanks man,

1. I'm 50/50 on going back to school. Not quite sure yet, but ultimately want to go into corp. dev. in tech / software. If that requires an MBA, then sure. But for now, definitely staying in IB for a bit. Still think there's a lot to learn, and I'd love to get some good tech deals on there to position myself better later on.

2. Well, I had no plans to be completely honest haha. Despite my recruiting answer, the honest truth is I followed whatever path seemed like it would guarantee financial safety. Then when I got to college, part of me wanted the prestige. And then after recruiting, I've realized I don't really care about the prestige, but I still care about financial stability. So that's where I'm at :) Plus, I do enjoy it here so not like I'm selling my soul or anything.

3. Yes 100%...one of my biggest regrets. I maintained a small circle, and that was a massive, massive disadvantage when it came to recruiting. Of course, I'd say just be humble and friendly. Don't need to go super tryhard cold-calling and pitching stocks. Just be a chill person to hang around and more people are willing to help than you'd think.

Thanks for sharing. Keen to get your thoughts on the following -

  1. At what point did you decide to just stay in banking? Especially after putting in all the hard work of prepping
  1. Over the course of preparation, interviews, and rejections, how did you keep going? In a similar position and every time there’s a rejection, it’s back to square one lol
  1. How do you feel about the decision now? Do you think you will have any regrets not pursuing buyside opportunities?

Thanks again!
