Have seen this done before, rare, but still possible.

Is there a sponsor client that you cover and are close to that may have a hiring need? That’s one way where I’ve seen this jump before.

The other way is starting as a As1/2 at a LMM PE shop that may be willing to hire an IB VP. Not sure this is the best move though as the comp differential could be significant.

Tapping your network is your best bet. It's a tough environment to make the move right now though, given where we are in the cycle. There are a lot of experienced PE people out moving around and also a bunch of bankers out looking for work. Crowded hiring market in finance all around. If you're still employed, I suggest you quietly network with Partners at firms where you might fit. Be a good banker for them while also showing them that you can think like a principal investor.

Make opportunities. Not excuses.
