Ideas for PE consulting intern projects?

Hi all,

I’m a rising sophomore (freshman summer) and will be interning at a very small local consulting boutique (1-5 people) that focuses on private equity advisory. The shop is mainly senior people who started the shop after a career in PE. This internship will likely be very ad-hoc as I don’t think there’s an analyst for me to follow and it will be remote for most of the internship.

I’m thinking about some potential project ideas to pitch to them that I can work on this summer. What are some projects that you think an intern can feasibly do, that can either genuinely help the senior folks, or at the very least serve as a learning project for me. I wouldn’t want to presume that I can contribute very much as I’m just an intern, but I’m interested in working in PE and finding an internship for junior summer, and am hoping to do something in this internship that could help set up for that. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thank you so much!

Do you have the ability to go into the office? I notice you said mostly remote - if you can go in, do it. Remote internships are typically not very beneficial. Out of sight, out of mind.

I would go in more with broader topics rather than fully cooked projects. i.e. do they need help with research on a specific sector? making company profiles, target and contact lists? Ask them how they spend most of the day and what the biggest challenges and blockers are, and go from there. You don't need a project idea on day 1, you might be better off observing and talking to people to figure out where you can actually do anything
