Interviewing with PE Firms for Practice
Is this a smart strategy? Would it make sense to still partake in processes with firms you are not interested in to stay sharp and ready for the firms you are interested in when those opportunities come around?
Engaging in interviews with private equity (PE) firms you are not particularly interested in can be a smart strategy, provided you approach it thoughtfully. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations:
Practice Makes Perfect: Interviewing with less-preferred firms allows you to refine your responses to common questions, such as "Why private equity?" or "Walk me through your resume." It also helps you get comfortable with technical questions, case studies, and LBO modeling tests, which are staples of PE interviews.
Realistic Simulation: Mock interviews can only take you so far. Real interviews provide a high-pressure environment that closely mirrors the actual experience, helping you build confidence and improve your performance.
Networking Opportunities: Even if you're not interested in a particular firm, the connections you make during the process could prove valuable in the future. PE is a small world, and maintaining a professional impression can open doors later.
Time and Energy Management: Be mindful of the time and energy required for these interviews. If you're juggling multiple processes, ensure that your preparation for your target firms doesn't suffer.
Ethical Considerations: While practicing with other firms is common, be respectful of their time and resources. If you receive an offer, handle it professionally, even if you don't intend to accept it.
In summary, interviewing with PE firms for practice can be a strategic move, but balance it with your ultimate goals and ensure you're respectful of the process.

I think so, I started ramping up my recruitment a couple weeks ago and made the mistake of interviewing at my top firm first
Best to interview around to get practice rounds in before the firms you really care about
It sounds like a good idea given you have the excess energi and time to do so. Although, potential risks may be burning some bridges and upsetting your current employer. I think I’ve heard that GS will fire you immediately if the heat you have been recruiting elsewhere.
Just be mindful of head hunter relationships I.e., don’t do it for CPI or Gold Coast if H&F / TPG are your top choices
Echo the above. You'll upset the headhunters who are presenting interviewees for their clients who are presumed to actually want the job.
If you flake mid-process without a highly legitimate excuse, they'll (rightfully) deprioritize you for future opportunities.
