Is blackrock’s investment division good as a PE exit?

Seems like there's not many threads on blackrock so I thought I'd pose the question.I know someone from a strong infrastructure IB group exit to blackrock infra, but had heard pay wasn't as good (however pretty solid wlb). Curious as to the benefits of working there in terms of experience and comp as I thought it was mostly fof and not great for those looking for a traditional PE experience. So just wondering why people go there from IB, is it simply the brand name or are there great exits? A reputation update would be helpful as well. Asking for advice as someone who's in a BB energy group looking into PE opps and doesn't know much about the PE competitive landscape

Blackrock isn't a PE firm. It's an asset manager, similar to Fidelity/ T Rowe. They do have a PE group that has shifted a bit to more direct PE deals in the recent years, but asset management is the overall firm’s main focus. I wouldn’t consider Blackrock to be a “PE firm.”

Gotcha appreciate that, makes sense that they’re more of a fund than a PE firm, so appreciate the clarity there. This is probably a dumb question but what exactly does direct PE entail?
