Is it possible for a Military IB Associate to make it to PE
Hey, Happy New Year everyone!
I am an ROTC cadet, and I was wondering if it is possible for a military post-MBA investment banking associate to transition into private equity . I know that many PE firms are hesitant to hire IB professionals who are too senior, especially if they have no prior IB or PE experience before their MBA. Would there be any exceptions for individuals with military experience prior to their MBA?
Definitely possible, but will be harder because you're post-MBA and an ASO (you might have to lateral as an ASO honestly). Have met a few guys with similar backgrounds (enlisted guys who then migrated from MM/BB IB) and now work at solid MM/LMM funds, but they all left at the analyst level pre-MBA. 1 has gone to MBA at a top 10 and the others haven't bothered to go since their firms promote w/o it.
It’s possible but you need to be proactive and be realistic about where you will land. LMM in a non major market is where most post MBA IB associates who transition to the buyside end up. That’s not a bad thing but just be aware that your field of opportunities is likely much more limited than it would be for an IB analyst.
