Is On-Cycle worth it?

A headhunter had an info session on campus last week and they said that this year, roughly ~5% of PE sits were taken during on-cycle and none of the classes filled their classes. With this considered, is it even worth it to do on-cycle when ~95% of the sits are going to be taken in off-cycle?

Would appreciate your thoughts, experiences, and your perspectives on this matter.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and perspectives on whether On-Cycle Private Equity recruiting is worth it:

Key Considerations:

  1. Opportunity Cost:

    • Preparing for on-cycle recruiting can be time-consuming and may require significant sacrifices. One user mentioned that it consumed most of their Spring and Summer, leading to some regret over missed opportunities like traveling.
  2. Headhunter Insights:

    • Headhunters typically start reaching out around mid-July, with initial chats happening shortly after. Engaging with headhunters early can provide a strategic advantage.
  3. Success Rates:

    • While some users have successfully secured positions during on-cycle recruiting, others have noted that the process can be highly competitive and stressful. One user described it as a "nightmare" and emphasized that rejection is inevitable and can be crushing.
  4. Timing and Flexibility:

    • Offers during on-cycle recruiting can be immediate and require quick decisions, leaving little time to think. This can add to the pressure and stress of the process.
  5. Alternative Paths:

    • Some users suggest that it might be wise to defer a year if the process continues to happen early and remains highly competitive. Off-cycle recruiting might offer more opportunities and less pressure.

Personal Experiences:

  • Successful On-Cycle Experience:

    • One user shared a detailed account of their successful on-cycle experience, highlighting the importance of having clear answers for what they were looking for and being well-prepared for headhunter interactions and interviews.
  • Headhunter Reviews:

    • Reviews of headhunters can vary based on preferred strategy, location, and fund size. Some headhunters are noted for their strong client lists and ability to secure multiple interviews, while others may be seen as disorganized or spammy.

Conclusion:

  • Worth It?:
    • The decision to participate in on-cycle recruiting depends on individual circumstances, preparation, and career goals. While on-cycle recruiting can offer early access to top firms, it also comes with significant pressure and competition. Off-cycle recruiting may provide more opportunities and a less stressful process.

Ultimately, it's important to weigh the pros and cons and consider personal readiness and career aspirations when deciding whether to participate in on-cycle recruiting.

5% of seats is probably a guesstimate for ALL PE opportunities. There are soooo many MM/LMM seats out there that are being counted with that.

If you are going to a tip-top BB/EB group and are set on UMM or MF PE, oncycle is your best opportunity and the number of seats filled is far higher than 5%. If you are at an average group or lower-ranked firm, the MM firms don't really do oncycle anyway - there is no benefit to them in recruiting at 2am on a Saturday, they are not competing with BX for candidates.

I will say you should prep now regardless, it's not fun to be learning recruiting material when working 90 hours a week. Better to learn the concepts while you have free time and then brush up later when you are recruiting

Yes. I'm a first year and swung and missed in this year's oncycle process. Felt like an idiot afterward but recognized fast it was an extremely valuable experience that helped me understand my weaknesses and what I needed to focus on for offcycle. You don't know where you're weak without reps.

Following that, I filled the gaps and went 1/1 offcycle, signed UMM in Sept. Would not have gone that smoothly without oncycle reps
