Is traditional PE career progressional pathway the only one?

I understand why obtaining your MBA from a top tiered university is sought after in PE. I even respect it and have read many many books assigned in those programs. That being said, unlike medicine where medical school is absolutely a prerequisite to becoming a surgeon, I don't think MBA is the only pathway. My understanding is attributes associated to being successful in PE are: strong financial modeling or analytical skills, ability to build strong relationships, and an uncanny sense of determination etc. I know my previous experience and personality would do well in the industry so I'm wondering what are some alternative entry ways into it. I'd appreciate any insight! (Additional context - I worked as a headhunter in the family office setting and currently hold my Series 7 & 66 - business dev is my bread and butter and looking to gain the financial modeling piece of this all). Thank you!
