Joining pod out of IB or after PE?
Current EB analyst ~6 months into the job in a strong group. Recruited early on and landed a MF offer early on in a good coverage area (TMT / Consumer / HC). Have gotten more and more tired of the process-oriented work (e.g., admin work, emails, check-in calls) and realize that the next job will be the same. I also miss the work I did in my investment club in undergrad, which I helped lead and won national competitions in (obviously very basic but my point is that I’ve thought about public equities before and think I can put a pitch together for interview purposes). If I wanted to make the move to the pod world and work for a strong PM with a bigger junior team (not some random PM who just started), would it make sense to rerecruit now from IB, or stick out the MF path and reevaluate after?
Edit: WSO is automatically moving this from the HF forum to PE forum
MF PE will open way more doors and will prob create a good safety net
MFPE opens almost no incremental doors.
All the top HFs pull from MFs. If your pod busts at a MM, MF PE on your resume will be able to open more doors than IB -> Pod shop. Jain specifically targeted 2+2s when building out their team
P self explanatory how useless PE experience is in public market given their shiz performance
It certainly does.
I don't think you'll be any more prepared at the end of your IB stint vs. end of your PE stint. That being said, pods blow up all the time, and having a MF on your resume at least provides a bit more cushion in the eyes of recruiters.
To add - you can ultimately go IB > MF > HF but you will struggle to go IB > HF > MF/PE, so if you want to 'scratch the itch' on PE, this is your shot.
Question: Do you do a business/industry slide when you make a pitch?
