Lateral Market
Do I have a better chance of lateraling as an associate or senior associate? I’m expecting the promotion to senior associate at the beginning of next year after almost 2 years.

Career Resources
Associate is easier - they will make you senior associate.
If you are early tenure sr associate (i.e., just got promoted) that's probably fine. Later tenure Sr. Associate generally will be hard to recruit.
FWIW - I've seen time and again that Sr. Associate lateralling to be a terrible career choice. The new firm plays out their 2-year option value and if it doesn't work out (for either individual or firm specific reasons) you are stuck trying to recruit again and need to make a lateral VP jump the next time around which as you can imagine is more difficult
So TLDR - either move as an associate at a firm you think you have a very high chance of making the next level or just stick it out and get promoted at your current fund.
