Lateral Recruiting Tips

Hey everybody -

I'm currently a third-year PE associate going through lateral recruiting. For those that have gone through the an experienced PE recruiting process, I would love any tips on how you prepared for case study-type questions across industries that you might not have covered previously.

As context, I've spent significant time in consumer and have received questions from other consumer funds like what would you diligence, what data would you want, what would IC be focused on, etc. They've been easy enough to answer for consumer, though I'm struggling when I enter interviews for other industries (e.g., industrials, enterprise software). Obviously there's a few things that make each business good that we all know about and studied to get into PE (e.g., good market, low capex, high FCF generation, strong growth profile, actionable value creation levers, etc.), but I get the sense that you need to show specific expertise / industry know-how to get trust at the senior associate / VP level.

Appreciate any guidance from those that have gone through the process!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips to prepare for lateral recruiting case study questions across industries:

  1. Develop a Framework for Case Studies:

    • Memorize a structured framework like Porter's Five Forces to analyze industries. For example, in "power of suppliers," consider factors like the number of suppliers, their size, and consolidation trends.
    • Focus on key elements such as market attractiveness, competitive positioning, financial metrics (e.g., EBITDA margins, FCF generation), and value creation levers.
  2. Practice Industry-Specific Diligence:

    • For industries you're less familiar with, research the key drivers of success. For example:
      • Industrials: Look at supply chain efficiency, cyclicality, and operational leverage.
      • Enterprise Software: Focus on recurring revenue models, customer retention (churn rates), scalability, and R&D efficiency.
    • Prepare to answer questions like "What would you diligence?" or "What data would you want?" by tailoring your responses to the industry's unique characteristics.
  3. Leverage Deal Experience:

    • Even if your experience is in consumer, apply the same diligence principles to other industries. For example, if you analyzed customer trends in consumer, think about how customer retention or market penetration applies to enterprise software.
  4. Mock Case Studies:

    • Build LBO models or investment memos for companies in unfamiliar industries. This will help you get comfortable with the financial and operational nuances of those sectors.
    • Ask mentors or peers for old case studies or CIMs (Confidential Information Memorandums) to practice.
  5. Ask the Right Questions:

    • During interviews, demonstrate your thought process by asking insightful questions. For example:
      • "What are the key risks in this industry, and how do you mitigate them?"
      • "What are the primary drivers of value creation in this sector?"
  6. Network with Industry Experts:

    • Connect with colleagues or friends who have experience in the industries you're targeting. They can provide insights into what matters most in those sectors and help you refine your approach.
  7. Prepare for IC-Level Questions:

    • Be ready to discuss what an Investment Committee (IC) would focus on. For example:
      • Industrials: Operational improvements, cost synergies, and cyclicality risks.
      • Enterprise Software: Scalability, customer acquisition costs, and ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue) growth.
  8. General Tips:

    • Practice walking through your answers in a clear and structured way. Explain your reasoning as if you're presenting to a non-finance audience.
    • Time yourself when practicing case studies to simulate interview pressure.
