MBA or law degree?
Hey all,
Coming from Australia where comm/law is the norm among bankers, do you think this would still require an MBA to move up in PE? Does the law degree provide enough credibility?
I think the skillset of law is much more useful than the coursework of an MBA. If an MBA is required anyway then it would shave off 2 years to not complete the law.
Any insights?
Hey Oligarch92, sorry about the delay, but are any of these useful:
Fingers crossed that one of those helps you.

Depends, are you willing to move out of Australia if you get a good offer. Coming to mind, Paul Singer reminds me of the best lawyer who manages a hedge fund. An M.B.A with experiences will talk about your previous experience and talk about different, various case study. It really depends what you want to do in future and what your end goal is.
P.S Just an assumption you are living in Australia and I can be completely wrong.
Lots of the distressed guys have JDs as well - Oaktree, Avenue, and Crescent all have some pretty heavy hitters with JDs.
For these guys is it usually JD + MBA or JD?

R.I.P Steve Irwin, I can't even imagine getting stung by a manta ray. He has great children who will carry on his passion.
Lawyer here who is working in PE right now.
Gating question is do you currently have PE experience and do you see yourself starting out of grad school in the US or elsewhere?
Default answer here is MBA, but law is doable with the right background (lots of doors will be still closed).
MBA from Australian universities don't hold much weight compared to Wharton/Harvard/ Stanford MBAs, so thinking that law is good Australia option
Undergrad with some corporate advisory experience, deciding whether to drop the law degree and graduate with commerce because instead of spending 2 years on law, I could spend 2 years on MBA down the track
Also I'm tilted towards investing areas that require legal knowledge (distressed sovereign, distressed PE, merger arb arguably)
I think the question then should be will you be employed in a career that would get you PE with just the commerce degree?
Are you at an AUS target? You can use the extra time to intern etc.
Clarification: the law is completed undergrad, currently doing comm/law and deciding whether to drop the law.
Problem is comm/law is a benchmark in AUS IB and so I'd likely be forced into full-time work at a boutique/MM position.
Do people ever go UMM/MF --> Law --> back to UMM/MF (same or similar fund) in the USA?
