MM / UMM PE Shops with Good Culture
Don't care about returns, reputation for MBA exit opps, even sector. Are there any shops known to be good culturally? Shops that overhire associates (so the opposite of Veritas) and don't have a ton of assholes (so the opposite of cd&r, LG, amsec, etc)
Have heard good things about LGP and Bain, anywhere else ?

They definitely keep the firm lean and don't over hire associates but seems like Genstar fits the bill from what I hear on the culture side. Even get the great returns as a bonus, though you don't care it seems
the problem with genstar is they are strict 2-3 year and out for investment professionals. they'll move you to opps team for couple years. i still think they require mba to advance after that - someone can check me on that
Think they are 2-3 and out but will send you to b-school/port co work before internally promoting you from looking at website/LinkedIn
Have heard great things about AmSec so not sure where you got that from
I've heard good things about Platinum Equity and AmSec
Heard great things and had a positive experience with the sixth street team that I interacted with.
Could you elaborate more? Been trying to find out more about the firm
Bump
Genstar, Francisco, NMC and Berkshire
Lol Francisco does not have good culture
Care to elaborate?
Jordan Company
Does anyone have insight on tech pe shops like Marlin, AKKR, and Vector?
Friend said that Marlin was much worse WLB than banking. My current co-worker (ex Vector) said that Vector was also much more sweaty than our current MM firm.
Partners group (Denver)
Avoid Chicago UMM
Are there firms that are worse or better than others and why? Can someone explain what qualifies as "good culture" in context of pay / performance expectations?
why? are you specifically referring to gtcr/bdt?
No I think BDT has good culture
Please elaborate. Curious about GTCR and MDP
I feel like anytime anybody makes a UMM culture thread these two get called out for being awful. I think GTCR is higher beta with different groups while MDP is just consistently unpleasant.
Heard good things about Battery
On growthier side heard good things about TA, Great Hill, and JMI
Gryphon
My interactions were positive but I've anecdotally heard negative things
Wut about interning at there
I heard people at gryphon were miserable. Could have been wrong tho
Wut about learning experiences like responsibilities wise
I know audax is quite sweaty but have heard SF office has a decent culture
Morgan Stanley Capital Partners has great culture I heard
This is going to turn into that older thread where every firm's culture is going to get both a positive and negative response. Unfortunately I think it's hard to say for example that firms like Genstar have a great culture because it's so people dependent. Whereas in IB generally you get a standard experience, PE firms can be widely different in terms of standards (strategy, staffings, types of individuals attracted to these firms, etc.). One person's great experience can be a nightmare for another associate because they worked for the wrong person.
If IB is standardized and PE shops are more idiosyncratic, you would think some shops are better than others. I don't get what you're saying
Symphony Technology Group has really solid culture compared to most MM/UMM software buyout funds
Berkshire Partners has the best culture for their fund size. Bain is great for MF.
