Mock Sourcing Call Interview
Has anyone done a mock sourcing call interview before for a growth equity shop? I have an upcoming super day and I'm not exactly sure what they look for. Most of my experience has been in early-stage VC at a firm where there was a significant amount of inbound. A bit lost on how to structure a sourcing call and particularly, how to lead into questions that really dig into the business e.g., figuring out specific metrics or financials. Any insight would be greatly appreciated - thanks!!
Can you share what company this is? or what their AUM is, just for future interviewees?
Honestly - these are pretty annoying, On one hand, doing a mock sourcing call in an interview definitely tells you if the interviewee has practiced a sourcing call with a friend / in front of the mirror. On the other hand, you can generally tell if someone has the sourcing killer instinct without the mock call.
I had a growth equity interview once where I was doing fantastically until I totally bombed the mock call portion. A few minutes into the call I asked "how big is your business" because one of the metrics they wanted me to get at was rough revenue. Good so far. And then my interviewer (very cheeky) replied by telling me the number of employees.
My recovery was absolutely awful, I paused and then "So what's your revenue?" or something. It was a cringeworthy road bump and became so clear I had no idea how to guide one of these conversations, the flow was ruined. Had I practiced this in front of the mirror it would have been no big deal - "Got it, X employees, makes sense. So then what about size in terms of revenue, maybe $X?" or something casual. But having done hundreds of these calls now it's so key to make sure the pacing is crisp.
From there you can just qualify everything "Would love to know a little more about how your business works, obviously ball's in your court to stop me if there's anything you don't want to share and that's fine, but would be curious to hear about LTV / CAC, [etc.], [etc.]...".
After the mock interview, on the debrief, my interviewer joked with me about the road bump and said something along the lines of, "Man, what a recovery, you just went straight for the jugular after that" which was my tip that that error was the crucial one.
bump if anyone has any data points on this
