Need Offer Help ASAP
Having a tough time making a decision here. Two offers below.
Looking to get a top MBA in the future (2 to 3 years) and hopefully start a company with a focus on media/tech/entertainment. Also interested in VC though, which is why this is tough.
Knowing this is a group that believes banking and consulting rule the world, I am sure most of you will say IBD over anything. Just looking for a real justification though.
Offer 1:
Strategy and Operations position at a top tech firm (think Apple, Facebook, Amazon) with excellent product/innovation exposure, but less of a direct "path."
Offer 2:
Typical IBD program at a BB as a generalist.
S&O at the tech firm will place you better into venture capital in the future. It may also better prepare you for entrepreneurship. BB IBD is better if you want to do private equity. Both should place you well into top business schools.
Whichever one you'll actually enjoy more. MBA placement seems equal.
In terms of MBA placement, wouldn't the S&O position give me a better shot. I've always been told that bankers are a dime a dozen for top MBA programs.
bump
I would say take the strategy position unless you get a banking offer at a top TMT group (GS, MS, Qatalyst).
I tend to be leery of any non-engineering role at tech firms. Google, Apple, Facebook, etc...you almost always need a STEM background to do any of the interesting work.
Funny that you cite them as an example, because Google in particular has a reputation for being incredibly unfriendly to non-engineers. That would be the last place I'd want to work in a corporate development. Cushy lifestyle, obviously, but I think it's pretty well-understood in the Valley that if you're not STEM, Google thinks of you as a second-class citizen.
Forgot to mention that this is a position in a group focused on new products and branding, so exposure to management, marketing, and product development would be very high.
Also, why on earth would you want to do Corp Dev. at any of these companies? So far from the core business.
Isn't Corp Dev at Google mostly former lawyers? Also, from what I gather, the Ventures Group is all internal hires. Not one banker in the bunch. I know biz ops is typically MBB and BB TMT.
