Non-technical background for Industry groups

Currently doing sector coverage within O&G/industrials/infra from a finance/econ background. Will I be a worse investor if I move into PE for not being able to really understand some of the science/engineering behind what I'm investing in? and how would I overcome this weakness if I'm interested in staying in my sector long-term?
