PE Background Checks

What background checks do PE funds do when hiring associates?

Is it a case of they will check the dates you worked at said institution through your centralized team or do they require that you give email details of your previous MD to speak with them?

Background, I started at BB, now at EB and my previous BB MD has since left the business, there are other directors/VP who I worked with who can give a character reference so not concerned about that.

How do I deal with my current firm? Can't ask for a reference for a new job until I tell them I am also leaving and have signed with the PE fund... so how can this work as an authentication mechanism if I have already handed in my notice and signed a contract?
