PE ops role vs. PE investment team associate long term career track

For someone that has both IB and management consulting experience (CDD & Corp strategy), what would be a better 5-10 years career path in PE (operations vs. investment associate)? What are the major pros and cons for each path (total comp, w/l balance, etc.)? Assuming IB background with modeling skills and consulting background with solid CDD experience. Thanks!!!
