PE/GE exits from bad group at EB?

Current SA at an EB with a generalist program (think EVR/LAZ/MOE) and am not doing too well, and think I will end up being placed in a relatively poor group in terms of exits (think real estate, ecm, or fig). How much would poor group placement limit me if I'm trying for umm/mf PE or GE? Would I have to lateral groups to coverage/m&a to have a good chance to land these roles, or is it doable to recruit from a niche and relatively weak group
