The Private Equity groups at the major banks function pretty much the same as similar-sized standalone shops do. None of them are investing firm capital anymore, so they're not regulated in like the Volcker sense. But they do have to deal with conflicts with the bank.. post-Kinder Morgan/Goldman Sachs/GS Capital Partners debacle, banks and their AM divisions' PE platforms pretty much have to avoid most perceived conflicts of interest. No idea how this specifically has impacted their businesses' lately, but I'm sure it's at least occasionally a pain in the ass.
