Recruiting at Other PE Funds with the Same Headhunter
I currently work at a PE fund represented by a prominent HH (CPI / HSP / Ratio). If I were to recruit for roles at other funds without telling my current firm, is there any way to recruit at other funds represented by the same HH? I know the HH is incentivized to make money, but at the same time, they should want to maintain the relationship with my current fund.
Anyone have experience with this? I guess I can network with people who work at the funds that use the same HH without going through the HH directly (not ideal but doable). I'd hate to lose out on a potential senior associate promotion at my current fund and/or miss potential opportunities at other PE funds I'd like to work at.
Thanks in advance!

Depends on whether or not the HH has an agreement with your PE firm that they won’t place current employees. I’m not sure if this exists, but if I were you, I would reach out to the HH to find out. There is a very low probability this information would get back to your employer … it risks the HH’s reputation for very little upside.
That said, many HHs will often agree that they won’t poach an employee within X months of the headhunter placing them. What i mean is … if the PE firm hires an associate through a headhunter and pays that headhunter a fee, the headhunter will not attempt to place that same candidate at a different firm for X months / 1 year.
That is reassuring. Good advice, thank you! I've been here for nearly 2 years so feel like that restriction you outlined at the end regarding timing likely wouldn't apply here.
Just to add one little anecdote wanted to share a buddy’s experience. He didn’t get a senior associate promotion so reached out to the recruiter that placed him, who told him they’d only work with him if they got the firm’s blessing first. Just something to keep in mind.
Helpful to know. So he waited to hear back from his current firm before recruiting. Guessing it might be one of those situations where "it depends" really is the answer.
