Reneging Big 4 for MBB FT + PE recruiting

Saw that there was a post on this, however just wanted to get an update. I want to recruit PE on cycle, so I want to put my ft on LinkedIn as soon as possible. How do I optimally reneg, when should I update my LinkedIn, and how do I go about reaching out to PE firms to show interest in on cycle recruiting?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach reneging your Big 4 offer for MBB full-time while preparing for PE on-cycle recruiting:

1. Reneging Your Big 4 Offer

  • Timing: Reneging should be done as soon as you have officially signed your MBB offer. Delaying this could create complications, especially if the Big 4 firm finds out through other channels.
  • Approach: Be professional and concise. Express gratitude for the opportunity but explain that you’ve decided to pursue a different path that aligns better with your long-term career goals. Avoid burning bridges, as the industry is small.

2. Updating LinkedIn

  • When to Update: Once you’ve reneged and your MBB start date is confirmed, update your LinkedIn profile. This ensures that headhunters and PE firms see your current role accurately when they begin sourcing candidates for on-cycle recruiting.
  • How to Update: Clearly list your MBB role with the start date. Avoid overloading your profile with unnecessary details; keep it clean and professional.

3. Reaching Out to PE Firms

  • Leverage Headhunters: Headhunters play a critical role in on-cycle recruiting. Reach out to them early (August-September) to express your interest and ensure they have your updated resume. Some of the top headhunters mentioned in WSO threads include CPI and HSP.
  • Networking: If possible, connect with associates or professionals at PE firms through alumni networks or LinkedIn. Informal chats can help you get on their radar before the process kicks off.
  • Preparation: On-cycle recruiting moves fast. Prepare for paper LBOs, modeling tests, and behavioral interviews in advance. The bar for preparation may be slightly lower on-cycle, but being well-prepared will set you apart.

Additional Tips:

  • Commitment: If you opt into on-cycle recruiting, commit fully. PE firms may view candidates who fail to secure offers during on-cycle less favorably in off-cycle processes.
  • Timing of On-Cycle: On-cycle recruiting typically kicks off very early, often before candidates have significant experience in their new roles. Be ready to demonstrate your potential despite limited tenure at MBB.

By following these steps, you can transition smoothly into MBB and position yourself effectively for PE on-cycle recruiting.

I have already landed it. Where can I find the headhunters? Don’t know too much about the field.
