Search funds

Why have they become so popular all of a sudden? A few years ago maybe 1-2 people we knew would be running search funds but now it is everywhere, especially in spaces like HVAC and other historically mom and pop businesses. What is driving this, anyone you know has succeeded/failed on here and are the returns to the space going to come down with more MBAs looking to rollup different spaces?

Read the Stanford primer, biannual research studies, and other online materials or books (like Jan Simmons’) to understand why. The returns are on average really attractive and the experience sounds pretty cool as well if buying your way to a CEO seat at 30
