Single Family Office Exit Opps

I'm joining a new semi-institutional Family office from a renowned family in my country with $2bn AUM as an Investment Analyst. It mostly does PE/VC/RE Fund investment and selective VC/PE direct investments.

Question is, what is the next best career move? I have already 2 years of FT SS ER experience, I only took the analyst job because the family was well-known and it was on the buyside. I guess I have a decent chance for going to VC and smaller PE companies?

Absolutely, your experience at a semi-institutional Family Office, especially one with a well-known reputation and a substantial AUM, can open up a variety of exit opportunities for you. Given the office's focus on PE/VC/RE Fund investment and selective VC/PE direct investments, you're gaining exposure to a wide range of investment strategies and sectors.

Your next career move could indeed be towards Venture Capital or smaller Private Equity firms. Your experience in analyzing and selecting investments would be highly valuable in these roles. Additionally, your background in sell-side equity research could also be a strong selling point, as it has likely equipped you with solid analytical skills and a deep understanding of market dynamics.

Another potential path could be Real Estate Private Equity (REPE), especially if you've been involved in real estate fund investments in your current role. Top REPE firms could be a possibility, although it might be slightly more challenging to get your foot in the door compared to transitioning from a major REIB or fund.

Lastly, if you've developed a strong network and have substantial deal experience, you might even consider opening your own fund in the future. This would heavily rely on your past deal experience and the relationships you've built in the industry.

Remember, the direction you choose would largely depend on your personal interests, career goals, and the skills you've developed during your tenure at the Family Office. Good luck with your next move!

Why do you feel the need to exit? Frankly, a FO is one of the more desired exit opportunities where people leave PE and HFs to try to get into. Unless it's just a misalignment of culture or for a true growth opportunity (i.e. you've got an entrenched CIO and you've got the opportunity to go be a CIO elsewhere) there really isn't a reason to leave?
