Studying Math in College for Finance
Would you say that having a great math background (Multi/LinAlg+) is necessary for finance? Long-term, I am interested in investing, but you don't need high level math for IB, PE, VC, or other traditional finance careers right? Is being a quant far better paid/better hours?
Doing quant vs fundamental investing is just straight up a different job. That’s like saying do you want to be the captain of a trans-Atlantic cargo liner or do you want to fly passenger 747s. Nominally they’re both transportation but they’re worlds apart. Similarly, quant and fundamental investing are worlds apart. Even within fundamental something like VC and PE are worlds apart. I’d just start with research on what tickles your fancy. But for any of those, math is a good background, get some grounding with liberal arts, and if you’re interested in VC/tech, computer science is great too. Enjoy!
It'd really only be useful as a quant researcher at a HF. I studied math and am doing banking, but hoping down the line to move to a HF and hopefully put my math skills to use. I'd assume that stat courses are more useful.
Is math useful at all hedge funds, or just for quant positions? For a normal analyst, is it desirable/looked more favorably upon compared to a degree like econ?
