Suspicious PE Internship
Hello all! I've been a lurker for a little while now, and recently l've received an offer from a small PE fund based in Canada. It's unpaid, but i'm all for the internship and the experience it offers. But, after a bit of digging around I found that the Fund is relatively new and as a result doesn't have much, If any, business at all.
I checked out the Linkedin of the guy that recruited me and it doesn't seem to exist. The thing is, this guy seems to be the one who is running the fund as well. I saw his handshake profile, and prior to the fund, his only experience is in consulting within two of the big 4 firms.
I then checked out the company's Handshake and Linkedin just to discover that they were both empty as well. As in, the company doesn't have much of a presence at all.
I'm not sure what to make of this, I want to do the internship for the title and the possible experience it can give me, but on the other hand I don't want to waste my time on an internship that has little value. I'm not quite sure what to make of this.
Is this just a search fund? Sounds like it
Thank you so much, I had no idea what that was until you commented. This eases my mind a bit.
What year are you? Doing a slave labor search fund internship is great as a first internship which you can use to trade up. I recommend all freshmen to do one, I did one freshman year and leveraged it into a more real PE internship then so on. It gets the ball rolling
I’m currently a sophomore and I realize that it may be a bit early to start internships amongst most of my peers. I just don’t want to feel like I’m wasting my time or if getting a job at a bank over the summer as a teller then asking to assist in ,or sit in on, more technical work.
Idk a one person search fund is not ideal, and probably not with that track record. Better than nothing, but I would ask yourself if this person can actually teach you anything or will have you cold calling random SMBs. Do they even have capital behind them?
Apologies for the delayed response, but from what little I could gather from online resources it does seem like he has the necessary capital to acquire a company, but it seems as if he doesn’t have any business prospects. I could tell as in the initial interview, I asked about my duties within the internship and he mentioned that the interns would be apart of the search for companies. He mentioned other details that don’t immediately come to mind, but it seemed as though he emphasized the search itself.
