Target Undergrad Colleges For IB/PE (Rankings)
Hello, does anyone know where I can find a good Target school list for IB/PE undergrad rankings?
I need opinions on how these schools compare as targets for NY SA and FT IB and PE
Northwestern (Econ)
Umich (Ross)
Georgetown (McDonough)
and Cornell (Nolan/Hotel)
Michigan Ross is probably best out of undergrad assuming not Cornell Econ/Dyson whatever it’s called. It’s all gonna be pretty similar but I’d probably say UMich >= Cornell > NU >= Georgetown. These schools are all very similar though and none are going to pop out of a resume like a H/W but also all are respectable targets so hard to compare between them as they all fall within the same “tier” and i’m sure at any sizable bank/PE shop in NY you’d find between 5-20 alums but never like 100 as you might at a Wharton or Harvard. UMich Ross probably does have highest volume though
I mean pretty sure aside of the per-capita bs. Cornell has the most presence of all these schools here, like if you go to linkedin people section, pretty sure, Cornell's connections sit in the hundreds ranger. Like 150 at bx for cornell.
Nah Cornell is probably at the bottom of this list for high finance. Every person I’ve met in finance who went to Cornell seemed like they didn’t even know what was going on

With all due respect, the order is Georgetown > Cornell > Ross >= Northwestern. Look at the number of people each school sends annually. Georgetown sends more than Ross despite the size difference. Cornell is better than Ross and NU, particularly if it's Dyson. Northwestern is about equal to Ross, they have solid placements, there just isn't as much of a focus on investment banking so smaller alumni network. If you want IB Georgetown is the best bet.
If you actually got into all of those, I would heavily weigh which you prefer, + scholarships if applicable.
IB will be easy from any of those schools, so that shouldn't be the biggest deciding factor at this level. All are very different school environments - pick the one you will do best at and enjoy the experience most.
Interesting, I’ve had so many conflicted opinions from a lot of people so this is what it might come to ultimately. I did get into all of them and I also have gotten a bit of aid (not a lot but some) from all of the schools. They are all within 10k of each other from 60-70k per year COA, so it’s not that big of a deciding factor.
I liked Umich campus better than NU and maybe the school profile, but for all of the schools someone has a point point said it was the best option and someone has said it was the worst so I’m am quite undecided.

Go to Cornell or Ross (biased to Cornell tho). The hate Cornell get's on this site is crazy. Regardless of school (Hotel, Dyson, CAS), I know a bunch of kids who attended and are now at HFs, MFPE, BB/EB, you name it. It's not cutthroat to do finance and you'll have a blast with good greek life while saying you went to an Ivy. Almost every senior from Cornell I've interacted with has been pretty chill in my experience (sellside and now buyside) as well. I didn't even go to Cornell (went to a higher-ranked Ivy) but Cornell heads are pretty chill, plus their alums generally go to bat for you as well from what I hear
I think the answer is Georgetown > Michigan = Cornell > Northwestern. IB is a wash from every school here. If you do the bare minimum studying, you’ll get a solid IB gig.
The real question then becomes which school will give you the highest upside, and for some reason, I’ve seen pretty crazy buyside placements from Georgetown and Michigan. Maybe it’s the tight knit alumni network or access to special student clubs like GPS, but those two really hit it out of the park. It could also be selection bias because they’ve got more businessy kids, but I think Georgetown (much like ND) is criminally underrated for that. The only counterargument is that the Ivy network is very real, so if you internally transfer to Dyson or A&S, Cornell could very well be the move.
