Candidly think there will be a lot of these funds in the next 10 years and plenty won't be performance issues. Many MPs don't want to sellout to GP stakes (which would require them to work like a dog) and are fine hanging it up with a huge bag. Obviously plenty of staff will dip but at a certain point they're not really needed the last 3-5 years of a funds life outside of a handful of people.
To be fair Vestar and many of the funds currently winding down are only doing so because of performance issues (versus voluntarily closing shops)…they only benefited from free money with low rates so LPs were willing to invest in mediocre funds
We hit the peak of the PE wealth creation cycle 2-3 years ago. All of these guys who rode the wave up are now unbelievably wealthy and see a much darker forecast up ahead of the industry. Why not hang it up and enjoy the last 20-30 years of your life...
