Waiting to Hear Back from Final Round
Had a final round interview early last week that I thought went very well. Spoke to the recruiter last Friday, and he mentioned that the PE firm had completed final round interviews, but that he had not received an update from them. He also noted they typically move slowly, but that he was hoping to connect with them soon. However, it has been over a week since my final round, and I've yet to receive any updates. I followed up with recruiter again yesterday evening, but have not heard back.
I sent thank you notes to everyone I spoke with and most of the people responded to me in a positive manner (including main partner). I'm probably reading into the situation too much, but I've spent dozens of hours on this process and am just looking to receive an update at this point. Not sure if the recruiter is actually being honest about the situation, but not much else I can do right now. Was wondering if anyone else has been in a similar scenario or has any other insights?
Thanks
Hey, it goes without saying that almost every person on this forum has been where you are. It sucks, so I’m sorry.
A few rules of thumb:
1) You can’t read into responses to thank you notes - people get responses and get rejected; people don’t get responses and land the offer.
2) Most PE funds move fast, especially if it’s a headhunter sourced role and for an associate position. Because of this…
3) Not hearing back quickly is usually a bad sign.
Now, there are many exceptions to these rules. In your case, and in most like it, it doesn’t make sense to try to read too much into anything. You might get the offer, you may be a backup, or you might already be out of the process and the headhunter couldn’t be bothered to update you.
It will help to internalize that there’s no benefit to dwelling on it. The universal best approach in these kinds of situations is to expect the worst but hope for the best.
Echo the above. There's literally no point in others providing anecdotal stories as every single fund and every single hire is different (i.e., n of 1 even within the same firm).
At this point, the best you can do is stay close to the fund/recruiter and keep your fingers crossed...while also keeping other opportunities warm in case this is a dead end.
