What should us 2nd years do? Oncycle 2027 zero inbounds

Starting a thread for us second-years who have received basically zero inbound from HH over on-cycle 2027. And seems like others have been commenting similar experiences.

As someone who read all on-cycle threads in previous years, feels like something different is going on this year.  Are there way more firms waiting for off-cycle? If so, how long does off-cycle usually after on-cycle? I prepped pretty hard for on-cycle and kinda sucks to not have gotten anything from HH.. I guess for now will focus on reestablishing connections with HH but if anyone has any advice or intel would be super helpful

It seems like you're navigating a challenging on-cycle recruiting season, and you're not alone. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should consider as a second-year analyst with limited headhunter (HH) inbounds:

1. Reassess the Landscape

  • Fewer Firms in On-Cycle: Recent trends suggest that fewer firms are participating in on-cycle recruiting, and many are intentionally leaving seats open for off-cycle recruiting. This could explain the lack of inbounds.
  • Off-Cycle Opportunities: Off-cycle recruiting typically starts a few months after on-cycle wraps up. It’s less structured and more spread out, so you’ll need to stay proactive and patient.

2. Rebuild Relationships with HHs

  • Reconnect Strategically: Reach out to HHs you’ve worked with before. Update them on your deal experience, technical skills, and career goals. Make it clear you’re still interested in opportunities.
  • Be Persistent but Polite: If you don’t hear back immediately, follow up periodically. HHs often prioritize candidates actively in demand, so staying on their radar is key.

3. Focus on Preparation

  • Sharpen Your Skills: Use this downtime to refine your technicals, modeling skills, and behavioral answers. Off-cycle recruiting often demands a higher level of readiness since you’ll be competing against more experienced candidates.
  • Know Your Deals Inside Out: Be prepared to discuss your deal experience in detail. This is a critical differentiator in off-cycle recruiting.

4. Expand Your Network

  • Leverage Your Connections: Network with associates and alumni at target funds. A strong referral can sometimes bypass the HH process entirely.
  • Attend Industry Events: If possible, participate in finance-related events or conferences to meet professionals and recruiters directly.

5. Stay Patient and Flexible

  • Timing is Key: Off-cycle recruiting can be unpredictable, but it often provides better opportunities for candidates with solid experience and preparation.
  • Consider Alternatives: If PE recruiting feels stagnant, explore other buyside roles like hedge funds or growth equity, which may have different recruiting timelines.

6. Keep an Eye on Market Trends

  • Monitor WSO Threads: Stay active on forums like WSO to gather intel on when off-cycle recruiting picks up and which firms are hiring.
  • Adapt to Changes: If the market is shifting towards more off-cycle hiring, adjust your strategy accordingly.

While it’s frustrating to not see immediate results, this could be an opportunity to position yourself even better for off-cycle recruiting. Stay proactive, keep building your skills, and don’t lose momentum. Good luck!

Take your fate into your own hands:

  1. Start cold emailing / networking with funds you’re interested in or that have alumni of your bank
  2. Reach back out to all the head hunters and reintroduce yourself - treat this like a first round interview

If you sit back and passively just expect to get an inbound and get a job you’re going to be very disappointed.

Same - second year analyst at a EB as a lateral hire and didn’t receive any MF / UMM opportunities.

Similar to what was said above, think the move is to just network and build relationships with HH
