Usually practiced by very large asset management firms. Pension funds like CPPIB, Teachers and CalPERS are also active in this area. Relationship investing is essentially providing capital to public companies to fund transformative initiatives, deleverage balance sheets, transition shareholders, for M&A or for other strategic purposes. Depending on the size of the investment, the investor may get Board seats / Board observation rights as well.

Thanks for the response! How's it different from equity co-investment that's usually done in partnership with VCs and PEs? Do they get to do a lot of DD/valuation as a relationship investor?

Regards

The difference is that PE / VC co-investments are done in private companies. Relationship investments are done in public companies. The valuation and DD you see in a RI role is more akin to a hedge fund style than PE / VC since you are dealing with a public company.
