I’m in the same boat, recent grad with an internship at one of your aforementioned companies with similar aspirations as well. It’s honestly a really tough market for recruitment but for me personally, I want to take a role where I can develop good experience even if it’s not something on the principal side as my first job straight out of college. For underwriting roles, it seems to be a hit or miss, really depends on what the specific responsibilities are since some roles like that can be a lot of back office work and if that’s the case then, I’d rather take my chances and continue to recruit. That said, everyone has different circumstances so just make whatever decision you’ll feel the most satisfied with.

Take the offer. Agency underwriting gives you an extremely comprehensive understanding of the real estate transaction from the debt side, whether it be sponsor credibility, financial structure and property performance, legal perspectives, you name it. There’s also an opportunity to move internally at this reputable lifeco after you start. You’ll be shocked at how fast a year goes by. In this market, take the offer. It’s not a bad one by any stretch. The name alone will help you in the future. Job>no job.

Wso is great at brainwashing students into thinking they know what jobs they want. I’m a firm believer that people don’t know what they want. The skills you learn in this role will transfer to any role you will apply for in the future. If you have any interest in investing in multifamily in the future, which you likely do, I actually can’t think of a better spot to begin your career.
