Approaching Networking Postgrad

Hi All,

Was curious as to how people continue to network when in the workforce. As it currently stands when I network, I send lots of cold emails and I somewhat use the platform of being a student. My subject line mentions my university, and my first line explains what I study, when I graduate, and what I'm interested in. I'm curious to see how people think about cold emailing when you're in the workforce, or if a larger majority of networking comes from conferences and interactions with other firms in your day to day work. It isn't a pressing issue for me just yet but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how I'm going to shift my approach after graduation in a few months. Any advice or personal anecdotes are very helpful.

Just be normal and have a purpose. People take calls for kids in college it give back and sometimes people find it fun to play the “wise older person.” When you graduate, you become a lot less interesting so you should definitely reframe. I also wouldn’t just be cold emailing unless you have a reason for talking to someone, otherwise you’ll waste people’s time. Focus on quality over quantity relationships and only take a call if there’s a true reason to hit that person up or if you’re genuinely curious to talk to them about something. If you’re continuously networking with people just to get career advice I would rethink why you’re making the calls.
