Best modeling courses
Hey guys--
Wanting to really nail down modeling specifically on the real estate side. I have done REFM's level 1 and 2 bootcamps and through two years of summer work experience in the industry I feel like I have a decent backbone but am wanting to perfect it. Obviously I know once I begin working is when I will really get the best feel for it but want to get the most experience I can while still in school so I can come in ahead of the pack.
Anyways, I have been given a few recommendations and the ones that come back and back again are REFM's REFAI and Wall Streep Prep's premium package. The REFAI would obviously be much more specific to the industry, and personally what I have been leaning towards, but I have had many people tell me WSP's premium package is just such a good foundation. In a perfect world I would do both but as yall know that shits expensive.
Pls leave thoughts or maybe even any other resources, I am open to other suggestions.
Thx

Personally I thought they were great. Level 1 is pretty basic but level 2 was pretty in depth. Rly good for foundational type learning for modeling
A.cre
ACRE
Never tried REFM but I did ACRE and highly recommend it
Just not wallstreetprep. Laughable amount of useless and tedious information that they think is important
If you're on a budget, Justin Kivel's udemy courses are great for learning the basics
In the middle of Acre now and couldn’t recommend it more.
Came across paid courses offered by ~10 providers (including WSP, A.CRE, Leveraged Breakdowns, BIWS, REFM, Break into CRE, Cambridge Finance, Wisdify Real Estate Finance Bootcamp, CFI, WSO, etc.)
In my opinion, amongst all, A.CRE's Accelerator program and WSP's Real Estate Financial Modeling course are the best in terms of their course structure and coverage (e.g. sectors, acquisitions/development, etc.). Leveraged Breakdowns is also up and coming.
A.CRE's Accelerator program is taught by 2 REPE veterans who did Master’s in Real Estate (also called Baker Program in Real Estate) at Cornell University.
WSP's Real Estate Financial Modeling course is taught by a then-Harvard Business School's MBA candidate who have REPE and REIBD experience in a REPE firm and Morgan Stanley. He is now a VP at the same REPE firm. This course is not offered in their Premium Package though.
I would also complement the above 2 with resources from Leveraged Breakdowns, their guides and analyst materials.
Hope these help!
P.S. Hoping to get some thoughts and reviews on Cornell Certificate Program's Real Estate Investment Modelling. If anyone has done it, it would be great if you can PM me. Thanks a lot!
This was super helpful. Thank you!
tracechoi is one of the best here. Excellent advice. Thanks.
Most welcome! Glad to hear!
I liked REFM's bootcamp courses. They can be picked up/put down easily (you can go "tab by tab"). I did the course in the mornings, getting to my old firm's office early as an accountant and working on the modeling course before work began. It was worth it and I learned the concepts/became comfortable enough that it helped me on AM interviews.
Here is my problem now as an AM: in our shop, AMs don't really need to do much modeling beyond ad hoc tweaking here or there. I certainly never build models. I feel like my skills - which were never great - have atrophied somewhat, for lack of being used. Most analysis that I pull together now is back-of-the-envelope and simplistic. If it cannot be used to explain something to a Portfolio Manager who has about 80 properties to worry about within 5 minutes, it likely isn't going to be helpful.
I had one major modeling exercise come up over the summer but it was more a beast due to the amount of simple/manual tabs and inputs required, not so much because it had complex formulas.
Question for the group: how much does a midcareer AM need to sharpen modeling skills? Is another run through the old REFM video course worth it?
