Business Mullet?
I'm a hick at heart and literally the only person in my friend group who has an office job and I am envious of the flexibility they have in personal expression at their jobs (Arborists, Trucking Broker, Small Roof Cleaning company etc) . During COVID I was rocking a flowing business in the front party in the back cut and now that we have been back in the office for a while I want to slowly test the waters here... will report back, but I currently have a very slight mullet and so far so good.
2 queries for the fine folks on here:
1.) Have you seen people succeed without regard to how "professional" they look? Any good anecdotes here would be entertaining.
2.) What kind of stuff would you do to your personal style if you weren't concerned about cleaning up for the office.
Well, you're certainly not alone in wanting to express your personal style at work! Let's dive into your questions:
1.) Absolutely, I've seen people succeed without adhering strictly to the "professional" look. Remember, it's all about confidence and how you carry yourself. I recall a fellow who was part of a community service initiative. He had a unique style, quite different from the usual office attire, but he was so good at what he did and so confident, that his style became a part of his charm. It's all about owning who you are and letting your work speak for itself.
2.) If I weren't concerned about cleaning up for the office, I'd probably let my inner monkey shine a bit more! Maybe I'd go for a more relaxed, casual look. But remember, even if you're dressing differently, it's important to maintain a level of professionalism. As Deion Sanders said, "Look good, play good. Play good, get paid good."
Remember, it's not just about how you look, but also about how you feel about yourself. Confidence can make any style work!

I rocked a pretty agro mullet all summer and the response from seniors was always gentle ribbing then acceptance and amusement. Most people at my company are pretty stock, lulu pants dress shirt or polo. My arms are covered in tattoos so I always rock longsleeve, adding onto OP I would be curious how people think tattoos are viewed in the work place in this age? still taboo?
Sensing a pattern here... I also have quite a few tattoos although nothing you can see when I wear a polo and pants. I know of others in the industry who have them and while they aren't necessarily hiding them they also aren't showing them off which is similar to me. I'm mostly just trying to avoid the 'What do they mean" question haha.
Props to you on rocking the mullet. I m hoping to do the same next summer.
Your position and your seniority go a long way. A developer with a long track record of success is going to have a lot more leeway than a 23 year old broker at CBRE.
I have plenty of visible tattoos, but also not on hands or neck or anything, so if I have to go hat in hand to raise money you'd never see it when I'm in a suit.
My favorite people in real estate are quirky, rich developers. In a world full of squares (yours truly included), I always appreciate the folks with a little edge and even more irreverence.
I have been rocking a mustache for the last couple weeks and no issues yet but I'll report back after year-end
god speed
