Career Advice: Internship
Hi Everyone
This is my first post, I have included as much information as possible to help my situation
I have accepted an internship with a REIT that platform that 80% investment and 20% development platform of 7 bn AUM. The role will be more focused on property development and market trend analysis and an internship with a REIT within their Asset Management division 161bn AUM which is owned by a Bank.
I was wondering what would be best the career pathway for a young professional in the long-term in the industry. What can i do in these internships to increase my chances to be retained afterwards, should i ask for certain work, what type of things should i try to work on to highlight future employers, what types of exposures are better, am i on the right track to REPE or IBDRE.
Really curious to hear everyone thoughts and get some help on where to make the next moves.
Thanks in advance
I think its pretty similar regardless of the industry. They want to see hungry, smart, and motivated people who takes the initiative and gets things done. At the end of the day, they want someone whose great at doing their job and fits along well with everyone.
I don't think anyone can tell you what to do since it will all depend on what projects and deals they are working on. But always try and offer help to others, make connections, and be nice.
Just remember - you're always the first one in and the last one out, and you are never to busy to take on a new project. Get exposure to everything and you should find out what you like the best. I think internships are most important for networking and to figure out what you love doing.
First and foremost, crush it at your internship and get a return offer. You are dead in the water without it. (not actually, but getting a different job is much more difficult)
First in, last out, ask thoughtful questions, dont make the same mistakes over and over. Be social, bond with your team, etc.
If you get a good experience in this internship and perform well, i don't think RE IBD or RE PE is out of the question.
Agree with everything that was posted. In addition, I would suggest you use your free time wisely. Many interns will just browse the internet if they have free time. Instead of this, you should get up and ask your boss/team members if there are any side projects he/she would like you to work on. Many times your team members will have simple Excel models they'd like to do but don't have the time to do it. You'll be a godsend to them.
Thanks everyone for your help, really appreciate it; it is really hard to get real estate advice. Going to definitely take everyone's' advice on-board. I've always seen myself working at these firms since high school. In both positions i will be the only intern, does it change the way i should act or their expectations of me. In one of the positions i will be working alongside the CEO of development and national product manager. Considering my close proximity to these senior executives are there certain unspoken work-based code of conduct or etiquette, what type of the relationship boundaries are there in such a situations with higher ups, especially in a publicly listed company. I know this may sound crazy but don't really want to leave anything to chance. Should i keep my questions specifically pertaining to my work and their work and avoid broad question that may indicate future direction. I've signed confidentiality agreements but it's more about positive perception.
Relax and be a human.
But seriously, most higher-ups are receptive to hard work and persistence. The goal is to always make them look good. Establish rapport with them through your ability to always be there for them in a crunch and your ability to produce quality work. Don't be afraid to make friends with them over time.
I don't mean this to sound dickish, but don't expect too much contact with the head of development. Unless of course it's a really small group, in which case it's inevitable. But every chance you get to speak with the higher ups, sit in on their meetings, listen to their calls, etc., make sure you're listening and taking notes. I'm an Analyst right now, and whenever I'm doing anything with the Managing Directors, I always make sure I have my notepad with me. Then I google any jargon, developments, etc. that they brought up that I didn't understand or wasn't aware of. And anything you can't find online just at the end of the week pull aside an analyst or someone and ask if they can explain it. Best of luck and enjoy it man!
